THE JOB

Cobbossee is a 4-week, 2-session sleepaway summer camp in Maine. The dates for this position run from June 9th to August 10th, 2024.

Cobbossee is looking for a few talented and motivated Teaching Assistants to intern in the Cobbossee Woodworking program this summer. The Woodshop Teaching Assistants will provide a structured learning experience, safe atmosphere in the classroom and gain vast skills experience in creative program management. The curriculum will vary in complexity and mediums, providing for complete beginners and for more advanced creative projects in advanced campers.

They will assist the Artist in Residence/Teacher of the Woodshop program and supervise the campers, aged 8-15, in the class throughout their summer in the program. The Cobbossee Woodshop overlooks the sweeping lawn to the Waterfront and at Cobbossee, Woodshop is one of the most popular areas of our program. Our campers LOVE building and creating things!

The appropriate candidate should submit a résumé along with a portfolio documenting artwork made by the candidate, 10 to 20 images, half of which can be, but not mandatory, drawings or paintings. Preference will be given to portfolios demonstrating wood shop experience. Drawing skills are not essential, but will weigh in the portfolio review. PPE knowledge is a must.

Cobbossee’s veteran Head of the Woodshop is the Associate Professor of Sculpture at the University of Maine, Gregory Ondo. Greg manages the Woodshop Program with a creative staff of three teaching assistants. Greg made a career as an artist before becoming an academic. You will have an experienced and artistic mentor as your direct supervisor to give feedback and formal evaluation throughout the summer. This is one of the best parts of this opportunity for aspiring artists and educators.

Each Teaching Assistant, like all of our male counselors at Cobbossee, also works as a residential counselor, living in a bunk with (and caring for!) a set of campers. Working in the ‘Shop’ during the day. Female specialists will also be assigned a bunk to care for, but will live with other female staff.

We intend to configure your employment this summer as an internship. Each year Cobbossee provides around 20-30 staff with internships in a range of academic and instructor positions. Learning objectives and contact hour requirements will be discussed through the interview process to ensure we provide the best professional development for you.

For anyone not familiar with the huge world of sleepaway camps in New England, it works as follows:

Every summer, families send their boys and girls up to New England to spend a couple of weeks or the entire summer at sleepaway camp. “Don’t they like their kids?” Of course they do. They love their children and it’s hard for them to be away but parents sacrifice time with their kids in the summer because summer camp is really good for young children. Camp teaches children independence, self-reliance, and confidence through exposure to new skills, people and an inclusive Community. It isn’t always easy. But it is worth it! Crucial to this process is you, the counselor. You will find yourself developing really fast just so that you can be the best counselor and instructor possible for your kids.
