Intern – Government and Community Relations (Summer 2024)

We are looking for talented students to hire for our Internship Program who can help initiate our solution-based business model to the next level. As an intern at NJ TRANSIT, you will oversee projects from concepts to completion. Our interns step away from the regular sitting at the desk to having the opportunity at hands-on experience with several business units within NJ TRANSIT. Our ideal candidate is passionate about learning and using creative solutions to make an impact on the lives of others.

 

Objective of this role:

This internship is a unique opportunity to contribute directly to the CEO's office, allowing interns to play a pivotal role in shaping government and community relations within the dynamic landscape of the NJT System. The intern will provide support for public stakeholder meetings, and will sometimes accompany GCR regional managers, senior directors, or the GCR chief on assignments or site inspection visits. The intern also will assist with typical GCR duties and daily needs, including updating important contact lists and generating follow-up responses to elected and stakeholder inquiries.

Engagement with Municipal Mayors: Develop relationships with municipal mayors, coordinating initiatives that align with the mission, vision, and values of NJ TRANSIT

Collaboration with Council Members: Actively participate in engagements with council members, gaining exposure to local governance structures.

Interaction with County Commissioners: Work with county commissioners to address regional challenges, establishing effective communication channels.

Liaison with State Legislators: Engage with state legislators while staying informed about relevant legislative developments.

Networking with Members of New Jersey's Federal Delegation: Gain exposure to federal-level considerations through interactions with New Jersey's Federal delegation members.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in a program focusing on political science, business, history, similar, or significant political or communications experience. 
  • Any year in college or graduate school is acceptable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Create Power Points 
  • Create Excel spreadsheets

Work Environment:

  • Hybrid / Office and occasionally in the field at municipal or stakeholder or other meetings
  • Approximate Hours Per Week: Students can work up to 40 hours per week through the 10-week summer internship
