Summer Internships at View Arts Center: Positions in Exhibitions, Workshops, Ceramics, Events, Performances, & Marketing

Internship Opportunities
View offers a ten-week summer internship program for college students and recent grads interested in gaining on the ground experience in a busy nonprofit arts center. Internships will be offered in the following program areas: Pottery, Community Arts/Workshops, Performing Arts, Exhibitions, Marketing, and Special Events. Interns are paid a bi-weekly stipend of $175/week and housing is provided. All positions are full-time (40 hrs/wk), including some weekend and evening hours. Interns may attend workshops, events, and performances free of charge, on a space available basis.  

While each program has specific qualifications, all successful candidates will demonstrate a willingness to learn, flexibility and adaptability, creative problem solving, and the capacity to work well both collaboratively and independently.  Interns will be working primarily with their specified program manager, but will be expected to help with other programming occasionally throughout the building. 


Intern Position Summaries

Ceramics/Pottery Assistant:
View’s Pottery Internship Program is geared towards college students with a focus on ceramics, recent ceramic program graduates, as well as ceramic artists who are interested in working in a state-of-the-art community ceramic studio with a gorgeous view of Adirondack nature, teaching, furthering their ceramic education, gaining knowledge in operating ceramic equipment, and learning about the operations of running a community pottery studio. The internship program provides students with experience in the nonprofit sector as part of a supportive educational community. Pottery intern will work directly with and report to the Pottery Studio Manager. A large portion of the Pottery Intern’s learnings, skills, and/or experiences include operational and administrative support for maintaining and managing studio equipment, materials, and supplies for ceramics and other related mediums used in the workshop facilities at View. Pottery Intern insures that materials and supplies are stocked and organized, maintained and cleaned so that the ceramics studio is clean and classes are efficient and effectively run. The Pottery Intern will assist the Pottery Studio Manager in the loading and firing of electric kilns along with reclaiming and pugging of clay. Based on skill level, the Pottery Assistant may be asked to teach or assist with pottery workshops.

This internship is an opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience in planning, executing and participating in one of View’s annual pottery events that engages with the community. Tasks will include planning, promoting, logistics, member relations, on-the-day support and post-review discussions. The Pottery Intern will be learning skills in operating a ceramics program within a community arts center.

 

Community Arts/Workshops
The View Workshops Intern plays a vital role in the implementation of View’s summer Workshops programming. This role will be responsible for some evening and weekend work hours.

Some responsibilities include: maintaining a clean and safe community art studio; lead in implementation and instruction of daily summer drop ins for children and adults (5 -6 days a week) and assisting in any follow up for daily drop ins, including assisting with the glazing and firing of paint on pottery, distributing completed artwork, etc; assist in organization, administration, set up and break down of scheduled workshops; assist in marketing via press releases, creating marketing materials and working alongside the marketing team to develop creative marketing ideas to serve the workshops and daily drop ins. There could also be opportunities to create, set up, and lead one or more workshop(s).

Qualified applicants should have: a strong art and crafting background; ability to work both  independently and as part of a team; interpersonal skills; ability to effectively present information via written and oral presentation; must be capable of moving up to 50lbs; experience working with  or teaching youth preferred; some knowledge of the Adobe Suite or other design software preferred.

 

Events
The Events Internship is a perfect way to gain skills and knowledge in community and special events planning in an art center, and gain hands-on experience in planning, executing, and participating in a range of special events, including fundraisers, gallery receptions, a craft fair, antique show, and more. Interns will participate in event planning, promotion, logistics, implementation, and wrap up. A creative background and basic knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, Canva, etc. is encouraged, but not required. The successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility, excellent communication, and attention to detail. Event interns intersect with donors, members, caterers, clients, artists, and vendors, and must be equipped to handle the unexpected with patience and professionalism. Interns will also participate in weekly staff meetings and brainstorming sessions, sharing ideas and working with a team in a collaborative environment.

 

Marketing
From print and digital advertising to social media and video, a Marketing Internship at View will give an in-depth, hands-on learning experience in a variety of mediums. Interns will be tasked and challenged every day to come up with new materials to promote View and everything it has to offer: musical and theatrical performances, art gallery exhibitions, events, workshops, fundraisers, raffles, and more.

While working directly with the Marketing Manager, interns will also gain experience collaborating with other programs at View to create and distribute materials like posters, print and digital ads, produce a weekly e-newsletter, rack cards, postcards, shooting and editing promotional photos and videos, writing press releases, maintaining parts of the website, and keeping active social media accounts.

Interns will work extensively in the G Suite and the Adobe Suite, using InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere most often. All materials produced will be evaluated by the Marketing Manager to ensure an appropriate mix of creativity and functionality. Interns will also be able to view the analytics of all digital materials to see how the public is responding to their work.

Marketing interns will quickly learn time management skills, as well as how to maintain multiple projects at once, and how to work quickly without sacrificing creativity or accuracy.

 

Exhibitions & Visual Arts
The selected intern for the Visual Arts and Exhibitions department will be learning a plethora of skills upon their appointment. The training will educate them in proper gallery practices: Exhibition Planning, Marketing and Design; Art Handling and Gallery Maintenance (prep, installation, deinstall and rejuvenation of space), Artist Liaison and public communications.

Responsibilities could include: Exhibition administration tasks and assisting in planning future receptions, artist talks, etc;  creating marketing materials: press releases, social media posts, postcards, gallery guides, etc; assisting in layout of walls, artwork, vinyl, label cutting, working on the ANEAW (Adirondack National Exhibition of American Watercolor) Catalog, etc; handling, storing, and moving artwork; preparing walls (patching & painting) for artwork; installing artwork; communication with artists, judges, jurors of awards.

We look forward to instructing selected interns on proper gallery practice and management, giving them a well rounded set of skills to continue in the art and gallery industry in the future.

 

Performing Arts
The Performing Arts Intern plays a vital role in the implementation of View’s summer performing arts program.  While the structure of the internship is a 5 day/40-hour work week, the nature of the position means that the intern will be expected to work late nights and possibly weekends if performances are happening.

Responsibilities could include: assisting in set up of each performance, including set up of seating, curtains, and audio and lighting equipment; helping load in and running for each performance, including serving as Stage and House Manager as well as lighting and audio board technician, depending on experience; assist in marketing via writing press releases, creating marketing materials, and working with the marketing team to come up with creative marketing ideas to serve the performances; create Playbills for performances; implementation of contracts and riders by fulfilling technical and hospitality needs; assist with the implementation of the Missoula's Children’s Theatre Camp, including creating and running a 2- hour workshop for children when they are not needed during the rehearsals as well as other needs as they arise throughout the week; begin preparation for the Community Theatre Fall production and research & submit proposals for shows for the 2025 season.

Ideal candidates should have: ability to work independently and as part of a team; interpersonal skills, ability to effectively present information via written and oral presentations; ability to move items weighing up to 50lbs; strong theatrical background, including on the technical side, preferred; Experience working with youth preferred; knowledge of the Adobe Suite or other design software preferred.
