Non-Profit Direct Marketing Intern

The Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Advancement invites applications for a project-based internship hosted by the Friends of the Smithsonian. This internship will be hybrid, with the opportunity to schedule regular onsite days in the Office of Advancement in Washington, DC.   

The Friends of the Smithsonian team focuses on fostering relationships with supporters, donors, and members to advance the mission and goals of the Smithsonian Institution. Their primary objectives include fundraising, membership recruitment and retention, donor stewardship, event planning and execution, marketing, and communication. They work collaboratively across various departments and teams within the Smithsonian to ensure the effective implementation of fundraising initiatives, membership programs, and donor engagement strategies. Additionally, the team plays a crucial role in mobilizing resources and support for the Smithsonian's diverse range of programs, exhibitions, research endeavors, and educational initiatives. Overall, their focus is on cultivating a community of dedicated individuals who are passionate about preserving cultural heritage, promoting scientific discovery, and enriching public understanding of art, history, and science.

 

Learning Objectives:

The Non-Profit Direct Marketing Intern will learn the ins and outs of the dynamic world of non-profit and membership direct marketing, with a particular focus on fundraising initiatives, through immersive rotations with the various teams within the Friends of the Smithsonian. Through hands-on activities such as writing gift acknowledgements, participation in event planning meetings, reviewing and analyzing data, and conducting research to learn about trends in membership giving and membership benefits, the intern will gain valuable insights into various facets of the Friends of the Smithsonian and the opportunities in the direct marketing industry.

The intern will also be paired with a mentor who will provide supportive opportunities for growth and connect the intern with professional development and networking opportunities.

This internship includes a capstone presentation in which the intern will demonstrate public speaking skills to an internal audience of advancement colleagues.

 

Requirements:  

Interns must have reliable internet access for this hybrid internship opportunity. The Office of Advancement will provide the intern with a laptop to use for the duration of the internship. 

 

Terms and Stipend

This internship will take place from June 10 – August 2, 2024. Hours are 25 per week for 8 weeks. Please note that meetings may be held during working hours, 9am to 5pm ET. 

 

The intern will receive a stipend of $4,000 and may receive program or course credit for this experience if approved by their educational institution.
