Basic Statement of Responsibilities

The Student Support Coordinator is a blended position whose primary function is to provide immediate mental health and related support services to credit students in specific high-population locations such as Willowbrook Woods, Athletics, and other campus locations during business hours.  The Coordinator also responds to student mental health emergencies after hours as needed.  Therefore, a strong education/experience background in the mental health field is necessary. Secondary functions include assisting the Student Affairs unit with both educational and recreational programs and various administrative responsibilities.  (NOTE:  This position does not provide mental health counseling for which specific licensure is required; a contracted partner provides counseling.)

Essential Functions

 

  • Student Support Services / Mental Health – during Business Hours
  • Student Support Services / Mental Health – after hours/weekends emergencies
  • Programs and Student Engagement
  • Administrative / Other Duties:
  • Participate in standing unit meetings/communications to identify and address student needs, behaviors, and concerns
  • Conduct or assist with student wellbeing checks as needed
  • Participate in unit assessment/planning including the collection and tracking of data
  • Serve on College committees
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Education, Experience, and Specialized Skills

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a field which offers the educational material (including clinical/practical components where applicable) that apply to the job functions.  Degree fields sought could be in Human Services, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Education, or related field.  Minimum 1 year’s work experience directly related to the primary functions of this position required.
 
Preferred Experience/Training in:

  • conflict resolution
  • crisis intervention and managing urgent situations.
  • working with widely diverse populations.
  • higher education or other student populations a plus.

 
Mental Health First Aid (@) certification required at time of application or within 60 days of hire required.  Valid driver’s license required.  
 
Students currently enrolled at Allegany College of Maryland or who will be enrolled in future semesters are not eligible to be hired for this position. Employees will still be able to use the Tuition Waiver benefit for Professional Development.   

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge/experience with identifying needs, offering immediate support, and/or making appropriate referrals to resources.
  • Excellent communication (verbal & written), interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
  • Excellent documentation skills; detail oriented.
  • Willingness to learn and frequently upgrade skills.
  • Experience with or ability to learn Microsoft Word, Excel, Office 365, email, and database/data entry knowledge and/or experience required.

Ability to:
manage conflict and to be professional under stress.

  • respond to unexpected and/or emotionally volatile situations with a reason and good judgment.
  • work independently.
