Great pay Treated like management- involved in meetings, decisions, feedback, etc. Great coworkers & mentors Positive environment Interns get new hire perks too! Relationships made

What I wish was different

Spent a few weeks longer than expected not assigned to a specific department, but this in turn had great benefits. Trained in all departments!

Advice

No day is the same! You get the real raw experience in a management retail role, and who better than an industry leader. It’s fast paced. Great people make up this powerhouse!

Buying Intern

May - August 2019 • Gilbert, AZ

What I liked

I loved getting the chance to give my input and participate in meetings and negotiations with vendors. I was surprised at how much my input and ideas were valued by management. I also loved the work culture and environment at the office. Everybody is super friendly and inclusive, and the employees really strive to help you learn as much as possible. I spent the summer shadowing one of the buyers, and getting to live the day-to-day life of an actual employee was one of my favorite parts. I was treated more like a coworker and not an outsider, which was very valuable to me.

What I wish was different

I wish Dillard's used more modern systems and technology. I expected to get a chance to learn different systems and programs to analyze sales and financial data, but most of their systems and programs were outdated by at least a decade.

Advice

Always be open to learning and trying new things! I tried to be like a sponge and absorb as much knowledge as possible, and it helped me significantly. Also, get to know everybody in the building at your internship, because you never know who might want to hire you down the road. Lastly, always give it your all, no matter what. I ended up declining their full-time job offer, but supervisors will notice your attitude and your work ethic, and they could end up being your reference for your next job. They could also have a job waiting for you if you end up needing a job someday.

Sales Associate

September 2018 • Columbia, SC

What I liked

I like getting commission for selling certain shoes and new merchandise. Also engaging with customers and providing them with their wants.

What I wish was different

I’m still at Dillard so there is nothing I would wish. Maybe commission every week instead of every month.

Advice

It’s best to get to know your product so you are able to sell it.

Sales Associate

May - August 2019 • Akron, OH

What I liked

Fun atmosphere to work in. This job provided a lot of freedom to do what you chose to do while on the job, make sales, or work in the back.

What I wish was different

I wish Dillards had a different way of how they provide commission. Many of the sale goals are impossible to maintain or keep up with due to discounts, how returns go against the employees, and still having high sales goals even when there weren’t any customers in the store.

Advice

This company pays great for entry level jobs however unless a full time position is secured do not rely heavily on this company.

Sales Associate

December 2018 - August 2019 • Pensacola, FL

What I liked

I liked being able to move around all day and stay active, also the wages were really nice

What I wish was different

I wish I wouldn’t have been pushed so hard to make sales goals. It made the job less enjoyable.

Advice

I would not work at Dillard’s unless you plan on staying in retail for several years because they lose a lot of employees and they have very little stability.

Management Intern

June - August 2018 • Akron, OH

What I liked

I loved how we were able to work with store managers to learn various departments and how they operate. Also, we were able to learn by doing a lot of hands-on work with merchandise and display creation.

What I wish was different

Sometimes, we did have to work on non-intern related tasks, which required us to stay longer.

Advice

I would say it is a valuable experience if you are looking to work in store management. You learn a lot about internal operations. Also, the hours are long, so be prepared to work.
