Non-residential research assistant

June - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

We were given a lot of freedom to explore which topics we wanted to work on each week. The hours were also very flexible, which meant you had to learn how to manage time. I also enjoyed that we still got invited to all of Hudson's events even if we were not residential researchers.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change is that we were not given a lot of feedback on our work so it was hard to improve beyond what you pick up as you work.

Advice

You have to decide what you want out of this experience. You can gain a lot of experience and a strong connection to the supervisor if you put enough hours in and are willing to reach out.

Political Studies Fellow

June - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

Great program, very well-planned, excellent curriculum, great teachers, good food! Also a generous stipend.

What I wish was different

I wish we had a little less work and more time to explore, and that the program was less centered on Plato's Republic

Advice

Apply! You'll learn during the application process if the program makes sense for you. Take what the interviewers say seriously - this is a full time job and then some.

Summer Research Intern

June - August 2017 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The work environment was professional, but friendly. My supervisors were extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and thus there was a lot of learning

What I wish was different

The internship was full time and unpaid- as a result, as an international student, I did not have any further time available to work and make money. Living in DC over the summer was not cheap.

Advice

If you can afford to do so, and are highly interested in issues related to security policy and foreign policy, I would highly recommend this internship. You make great connections, get to work with some amazing people and are placed in an intellectual environment that pushes you to think and work in an engaged and different manner

I loved the job flexibility and intern opportunities to get published and interact with career professionals.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked on the weekends too!

Advice

It takes initiative to find new projects but it’s worth it.
