Nurse Extern - Neuro/Stroke Unit

May 2019 • Fond du Lac, WI

What I liked

This experience allowed me to solidify my med/surg skills learned in the classroom and in lab. I had the ability to work with a preceptor on the unit and take care of 2-4 patients with minimal assistance. I believe this experience has allowed me to grow as a student nurse and to feel more comfortable in my position before graduation.

What I wish was different

In general, being a nurse is challenging. My unit welcomed me with open arms and taught me through the summer. Nothing could've changed to make this a better experience, it was absolutely wonderful!

Advice

I would urge you to print out hospital policies and become familiar with them before beginning your position as a nurse extern. Additionally, work hard to become familiar with the unit, staff, and charting system. You will feel like you may be slow compared to the skilled nurses on your unit, but just keep doing your best! You WILL get there!

Student Nurse Intern

May - July 2017 • St. Charles, MO

What I liked

The job was a complete preceptorship. You followed around a nurse all day which gave me real exposure to how it will be upon graduation as a real nurse.

What I wish was different

I wish the program had been longer. It was about 6 weeks and SNIs could be hired on as clinical partners but that is a different scope.

Advice

Apply early! This way you can get your pick of what type of floor you’d enjoy.

Student Nurse Intern

May - June 2017 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

It was nice to get some extra hands on clinical experience outside of the school environment. I got to focus strictly just on the internship full time instead of managing both clinical and classes.

What I wish was different

I wish I was longer! It was a 4-week program but I think 8 weeks would have been better!
