Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

The team was incredibly helpful and I could work at my pace to learn as much as possible. This job was remote so I had a bit of freedom to work wherever I wanted. I was also assigned a mentor that I could talk to about the company and its subsidiaries. The project gave me a lot of insight on the software architecture of the system and helped me understand the software development lifecycle.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done more during the internship. There were some unproductive days. Furthermore, knowing when to ask questions could have saved me a lot of time debugging

Advice

Come in with an open mind, ask questions to the team, and remember that this is a learning experience!

Software Tester

What I liked

There are several things about my time at Xylem that I enjoyed. The team I worked with was an excellent group of people to get to know and learn with. I enjoyed learning about all of the technology produced at YSI, and how I needed to work with it in order to get my work done. I also liked learning about the software development side of life and how the individual components of R&D come together. Lastly, I really enjoyed learning about the structure of our team, and how the development process went in terms of who deals with what.

What I wish was different

While there is not much I can say I disliked about my time with YSI, there are a few things I can say could have been different. First, I wish the workflow could have moved at a faster pace. Sometimes I felt that things moved a little slow when it came to the amount of work I had. I can also say that I wished I had more access to the equipment needed to do my work. The equipment I needed to test was in short supply on our floor, so I had hoped that they would have made more equipment available to their testers.

Advice

A piece of advice I could give to any upcoming interns to Xylem is to be ready to absorb a lot of topics. I went through a lot of different things during my time at YSI, and I learned several different ways to perform software tests. Each of these ways are different, so it is important to keep an open mind in learning about them all. Another piece of advice I can give is to learn the names of the products early. There are dozens of different products I worked with during the Summer, and it took me a bit too long to learn what differed them all. Get to know the names of the equipment and what everything does.

What I liked

I loved the company culture. I was able to feel apart of the company even while working online. Every team I worked with encouraged me to learn and ask questions. I truly felt valued and appreciated for the work I did.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to work in-person more and go into the office more often.

Advice

Advice I would give is to not be afraid, take risks, ask questions, and meet new people. Everyone at Xylem wants to help you succeed and do the best that you can do.

Manufacturing Engineering Co-Op

What I liked

The work experience is unparalleled compared to other internship opportunities. The responsibilities you are given are far beyond the normal tasks associated with low level intern work. The expectation is that you are employed in the role of an engineer and are given the resources and freedom to perform as such provided you are willing to learn and demonstrate competency

What I wish was different

I wish the nature of the work was a little less tedious. A lot of the work consisted of large scale projects that were undesirable or too time consuming for engineers whose core skills were better utilized elsewhere. This left many projects to be tasked with, oftentimes pulling you away from the original ones you were tasked with in the first place.

Advice

A competency regarding hand tools and how assembly works is paramount for success here. Manufacturing requires you to work with a wide range of people whose skills and abilities vary vastly. Patience is essential and having an open mind to suggestions and multiple avenues of approach to problem solving are valuable traits to posses here

Process engineering intern

What I liked

I am enjoying and am very much appreciative for the opportunity of doing a co-op with Xylem as it is giving me a lot of professional, real world experience with my major. I enjoy the freedom I am given with my work as a co-op here. It gives me a real sense of what life after graduation will be like and it has taught me a lot about professionalism in the workplace.

What I wish was different

I would’ve liked to have had more experience working for company outside of the office, although I am still learning a lot.

Advice

I would advise anyone currently looking for an internship or work experience to be open to trying new things, even if it doesnt seem like it aligns perfectly with what you think you want to do after college. You will learn a lot no matter what, and it can show you a lot about the different paths you can take within your field that you may have not known about.
